Compress Images

Image compression is a way of reducing a file's size so it takes up less space and loads faster. This is done by removing data that isn't essential to how the image looks, or by storing the existing data more efficiently. Some compression methods keep all the information from the original image, while others reduce file size by discarding some data, which can lead to a slight loss in quality.

The most common image formats use different types of compression and suit different purposes. JPEG works well for photos since it allows for significant file size reduction, while PNG preserves image quality losslessly and supports transparency. WebP and AVIF offer more efficient compression with good quality and are widely used on modern websites. Other formats, meanwhile, aren't meant for compression or aren't as widely supported across programs and devices, so the right format depends on where the image will be used.
